Throwback Thursday: Banff, Alberta

A few years ago, I had the opportunity to go to Calgary, Alberta. It was only for one night but the group I was with decided that it would be fun to take a trip up to Banff instead of stay in the Calgary area. I was skeptical at first, but I’m so glad that we did it. It was my first time in Alberta and I wanted to see as much as I could.

Like I said, it was a few years ago so that camera quality isn’t the best but I still love looking through these photos and remembering what it was like standing on top of Tunnel Mountain in Banff and being awestruck by my surroundings. I can’t wait to get out west again this summer and climb some more mountains!

Oh you know, just an elk and some wild horses to start off the trip nicely.

Even driving near Banff is beautiful.

We started our hike up Tunnel Mountain, it was by far the most beautiful place I have ever seen.

Near the top, at this point I was almost crying from being so close to the edge.

As we made our trek back down the mountain (at times on our bums) we saw these little friends. They were very friendly and came right up to us.

This is one of my favourite pictures of all time.

We spent some time walking around Banff and had lunch. We didn’t have too much time so by dusk we headed back towards Calgary. I had such a fun time in Alberta, I can’t wait to go back west!

West Coast Wedding

Vancouver has to be one of my favourite cities in the world. Being as my sister moved there just under two years ago, I have the pleasure of going to visit whenever I want!Β I had always been an East Coast lover, I could never understand the pull of the West Coast – that was until I visited it for myself. How could you not love a city surrounded mountains and water, not to mention all the delicious food.

This past summer, my West Coast sister got married! It was the first wedding in the family – pretty exciting stuff. I spent a few weeks with her and the rest of my family in Vancouver getting ready and then promptly resting. Who knew one day could be so exhausting.

Photo shoot before the wedding, typical of my family

The day was amazing, my sister’s attention to detail and eye for design really allowed for the wedding to be unforgettable. What a beautiful day it was and in the perfect location. They chose a venue with so much charm and character, Hart House in Burnaby, BC. Seeing Hart House for the first time is like living in the past, you’ll fall in love immediately. (I highly recommend a visit there for brunch, amazing eggs benny)

The wedding was in early August, a great time of the year in Vancouver, the day started out a little dreary but it turned out to be lovely weather. The whole day was a blur, as I was one of the bridesmaids along with my other sister and my now brother-in-law’s sister, I didn’t get a chance to take too many photos. The only ones I could sneak were some candid iPhone shots.

I can’t properly do Hart House justice with words, you’ll just have to see it for yourself one day. Here’s the bride and groom with Hart House in the background.

The photographer that my sister and her husband picked is a natural light photographer. I really enjoy her work, she’s super fun and has some great ideas. Check out Taliah Leigh’s website and portfolio. She took some amazing photos of the ceremony and reception at Hart House, you can check them out here.

But of course, the vacation had to come to an end, and this had been a long one – a cap to a two month trip through California and British Columbia. After getting some last minute shopping and eating done, I was off, back to Toronto, back to reality.Β It’s always sad to leave a place you love, but even more so when you have to leave your fur nephew and niece.

Hiking the Escarpment

I love the fall, as I’ve said before the colours are mesmerizing. I’m lucky enough to live in the shadow of the Niagara Escarpment along the famous Bruce Trail – the outdoors are all around me. It’s a great sight throughout the year, from the buds in the spring, to the fresh green of summer, and the changing of the leaves all throughout the fall. I highly recommend a visit if you’re in the area!

For me, I visit any time that I feel the need to get out. Last Friday, I convinced my dad to take a hike with me and my family’s dog, Monty. Monty is an English Springer Spaniel, we adopted him from a rescue about 4 years ago, he’s 9 now and has as much energy as a puppy does, perfect for hiking.

I wanted to share some beautiful shots that I snapped during our 2 and a half hour hike along the Escarpment Trail and Bruce Trail. Enjoy!

On our journey back to the car, we stopped at a bakery that I’ve been going to since I was little. We had a spot of lunch and a cookie, we were famished and I forgot to grab some shots of the delicious food so no photos of the food – sorry!

We also passed by a family friend’s vineyard who happened to be out picking some grapes to sell at the side of the road later in the day.

The farmhouse

Being an animal person, I had to stop and give a pet to this beautiful horse at the side of the road. She trotted right up to me, not shy at all!

It was a great day to hike, I can’t wait to do it again soon…
